Forty Nights

Forty Nights

In our Sunday readings, we hear of God’s covenant with Noah after the flood and then read about Jesus being “driven” into the desert by the Spirit – to develop his own covenant with God. Lent offers us a time to reflect on our own covenant with God and to let ourselves be “driven” into an inner desert where we face whatever separates us from God.

In today’s reflections, guest blogger Maud McInerney offers us an original poem that emerged from these readings. Maud teaches medieval literature at Haverford College in Pennsylvania, and has written on topics such as mysticism and what the stories of the virgin martyrs meant to medieval women. Maud says, “I visited Spiritus in person during the summer of 2021, while staying with a friend in Rochester. We were both moved to tears by the experience, and she is not even Catholic. I have not been able to return in person since, but I am hopeful for this coming May!” Thank you for this poem, Maud, and we hope to see you soon!
