It’s that time of year when we are all trying to do something with all the leaves that have fallen. When we talked about this at our Mother Earth meeting we had a very lively discussion. Some of us live in towns where it is the residents role to take care of the leaves while in some towns leaves are picked up if placed in piles by the curb. Sometimes those leaves blow back into the yard while waiting to be picked up. Joe Gersitz suggests another way to handle the leaves in your yard. Here are his thoughts: “Leaves are like the birds, they neither work nor reap but they are rainbow colored, until they fall in autumn. How do we welcome them then as gifts to the earth? Here’s the recipe! DIY instructions:
Step 1: Take a 10 or 12 foot length of hard wire fencing, 3 or 4 feet wide,
Step 2: Join the two ends with zip ties, forming a silo,
Step 3: Place it on level ground in a garden corner,
Step 4: Rake your gifted leaves onto a tarp.
Step 5: Drag the tarp to your silo and dump, VOILA! Done!
Added options: add any organic you have, kitchen waste, grass clippings, water, etc. patience and wait. In spring when the grass greens and the robins chirp you have, the gift of compost! Go to your street and join the chant ‘We don’t leave our LEAVES at the curb…anymore.’ “

Good blog, Lou Anne;
Also, leaves on lawns can be mowed and mulched without raking. Removing leaf cover from garden beds exposes bulbs and roots to excessive cold, and kills overwintering insects.
