Advice for Living

Advice for Living

Jesus said a lot of things to his disciples, but some really important ones are captured in the 7th chapter of Matthew that we hear in the daily readings this week.  He said things like, “Stop judging, that you may not be judged…Why do you notice the splinter in [another’s] eye, but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own eye.”  Then he goes on to say, “Do not give what is holy to dogs, or throw your pearls before swine, lest they trample them underfoot.”  He concludes by saying, “Enter through the narrow gate…that leads to life. And those who find it are few.”

Just let these sink in for a few moments.

Jesus is encouraging us to do serious and intentional inner work.

Work related to our judgments.

Work related to careful discernment.

Work related to paying attention to what truly brings life.

I know that I find it hard to do all of these on a regular basis.  I slip back into patterns that are well worn in my life. Sometimes I don’t have the energy or the time or the will to engage.

So I need a reminder.

Something that encourages me to release my judgments of others or of myself.

Something that encourages me to pause and breathe.

Something that helps me to take it all in and be more purposeful.

Maybe this can be your reminder today.

Thank you for this beautiful reminder, Mike. It is so difficult in this world not to judge but we must find joy in seeking only the good that we find in following Jesus example. God Bless you and your day. ♥️Fran
