The Mother Earth Committee has some thoughts as a follow-up to the Greenspot done last year on ethical apparel. In that Greenspot Green America’s hierarchy of choices in getting clothes is as follows:
Reduce and Reuse:
1. Buy less clothing overall. When you’re considering a clothing purchase, ask yourself whether you really need the item.
2. Buying used clothing at consignment boutiques, thrift stores, and charity shops keeps old items out of the landfill, conserves resources, and helps you save money. You can also organize a clothing swap in your office or community.
3. When purchasing new items, look for clothing that you’ll be able to wear over and over again. Choose high-quality items that fit your personal style, and then care for them properly so they last. 4. Select more environmentally-friendly fabrics.
5. Choose items with certifications like Fair Trade and Union-Made, if possible.
Patronize retailers and companies with better social and environmental records.

Wow, that’s a lot of red tags on Amazon! And we all use it so much for its convenience. Maybe we need a campaign to ask Amazon to pay attention to this. Unless there is one already that we can join?
